About us
The only Branch of Samaritans in Cornwall, we are a local independently registered charity, run completely by volunteers. Based at 19 Treyew Road in Truro since 1970, we have approx. 100 volunteers - mainly Listening Volunteers but also Support Volunteers who assist with fundraising and finance through to cleaning and admin. There are no paid employees, with donations and funds raised focussed on the running of our Branch and achieving our vision. We support the whole of Cornwall through our outreach, alongside responding to anyone contacting us in despair as part of the national Samaritans network. We respond to calls and webchat, feeding into a national network of Samaritans support, where the first available Samaritan responds - over 20,000 calls for help are answered by Cornwall’s volunteers each year. We also receive referrals and work in partnership with a range of other organisations raising awareness. We are particularly proud of our community preventative work in county – where we proactively visit locations/organisations, talking to people that need us, including giving talks to groups e.g. schools and colleges, Young Farmers, Rotaries and WIs, plus taking stands at events such as Royal Cornwall Show. Our impact is significant, but we need support to continue our vital work here in Cornwall costing in the region of £140,000 this year.
