About us
Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy, and Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide. We believe that suicide is preventable.
The Samaritans is a national volunteer-led charity working across the UK and Ireland, providing support to people in distress, including those at risk of suicide. We rely on donations to help fund our life-saving work.
The Inner South West London branch of Samaritans currently has around 130 trained listening volunteers, who support people from all over the country who contact us by telephone, email or web chat. Getting a response from a real person and being given the time and space to talk things through helps people to find a way through their problems. We help people to explore their options so they can make decisions that are right for them.
Our service is available 24/7 and we carry out this work from our premises in Putney. Our catchment area covers a large part of South London, from Brixton to Balham, down to Wimbledon and Tooting. We also engage in a wide range of outreach activities in our area, including schools, prisons, events and stations, the latter as part of a national programme with National Rail.
