My Story

Samaritans is an amazing charity with so many incredible volunteers, providing emotional support to people who need a confidential listening ear. I was lucky enough to work in the media team at Samaritans for over five years and met some lovely callers and volunteers along the way.
I am raising money for Bury Samaritans in memory of one of their brilliant volunteers, Darran Latham, who passed away in 2023. I first met Darran in 2019 and knew straight away that he was a gem. Over the years, I had the pleasure of supporting Darran with media work (he liked to call me his agent!), and was always blown away by his quick wit and determination to support people who are struggling to cope, even though it wasn’t easy for him to share his story.
He loved being a volunteer and was so committed to helping people, and his fellow volunteers at the Bury branch. Samaritans saved his life at a time when he was at his lowest and he turned his life around and gave back to the charity that held a special place in his heart and recovery. We were forever joking about the North and the South and I hoped one day his dream of being a writer would come true.
A life taken way too soon. I’m glad I had the privilege and honour of knowing Darran and having all the laughs.
This one is for you Darran. Let’s hope the rain stays in the North on the day!
