My Story
The Samaritans vision is that fewer people die by suicide. The national Samaritans organisation answers more than 3 million calls a year from people in emotional stress who need someone to talk with. From that total, the 140 volunteers in our local branch here in Salisbury receive 20,000 calls. We also work within our area to encourage quality support for people in need of help during moments of crisis.
Each branch is responsible for covering our local costs and here in Salisbury, as with other branches, the same volunteers who receive the calls are responsible for raising this money. It costs Salisbury Samaritans more than £50,000 a year to remain open and this we do thanks to the generosity of our local community.
Seven years ago, the sudden and tragic loss of my best friend April to suicide, drew my attention to the fragility of human life and the importance of support processes for those feeling vulnerable. You will understand why I joined Samaritans. Please support my Southampton Marathon on 6th April, share with me my memories and help us here in Salisbury to do all we can to support those more vulnerable than ourselves. Thank you.
